Why I love them
(against my better judgement)
I started these expecting game stats, weapons and a few monsters. What I got was a barefoot man in boxer shorts being emotionally managed by his ex-girlfriend's prize-winning cat while the universe watches. Obviously, I kept reading.
These books are ridiculous in the most carefully constructed way. Matt Dinniman will have me laughing at an achievement notification, then—without so much as a polite warning—make me care deeply about people trapped in an alien death dungeon. Rude, frankly.
You don't need to be a gamer. The stats, loot and level-ups are easy to follow, even when Carl's plans are not. I'm now alarmingly invested in fictional achievements, the survival prospects of a cat and whether Carl will ever acquire pants. He probably won't. That would be far too sensible. Mongo is appalled.
